Q: How Do Paralympic Athletes Turn Obstacles into Growth?

Recently, I found myself training on the track in extremely heavy wind. The kind of wind that drowns out even the clearest voices. For a blind Paralympian, hearing my guide is crucial when I’m sprinting full speed down a runway. Without clear audio cues, I lose my runway alignment, and that’s dangerous.

In that moment, we had two choices call it a day or find a solution.

We chose growth.

My coach positioned himself on one side of the pit, while my guide stood on the other. Instead of relying on a single voice, they clapped and shouted together, creating a broader, louder sound target for me to run toward.

A simple pivot created a powerful result.

I was able to cut through the wind, maintain my path, and stick the landing—proof that even minor adjustments can deliver major breakthroughs.

You can actually see my perspective from this training session, recorded with my RayBan Meta Glasses.

Q: Why Does Growth Often Hide in Discomfort?

Just like I stretch my muscles to build physical strength, life stretches our mindset, patience, and adaptability. Growth rarely shows up in moments of comfort. It often arrives dressed as frustration, inconvenience, delays, or uncertainty.

Carol Dweck describes what it means to have a growth mindset in this article, What Having a “Growth Mindset” Actually Means

When life throws unexpected curveballs, we’re not being punished—we’re being shaped. That’s where we’re tested. That’s where we evolve.

There’s no need for sight when you have a vision, and sometimes the vision lies in the lesson, not the outcome.

Q: How Can We Apply This Lesson in Daily Life?

Leadership. Business. Parenting. Sports. Every area of life will deliver moments that feel inconvenient.

Here’s a simple framework to use the next time life gets loud:

  • What can this teach me?
  • How can I stretch, adapt, or pivot here?
  • Who might I become because of this?

The answers may not come immediately. But they exist. And once you uncover them, you emerge stronger, wiser, and better prepared for whatever comes next.

Q: What’s the Real Takeaway on Growth and Vision?

True transformation rarely feels comfortable in the moment. The greatest breakthroughs often come from the most inconvenient places.
