I'll never forget standing on the podium at my first Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece. The moment they placed the medal around my neck, pride washed over me. But that moment wasn't just about victory—and it certainly wasn't just about me.
As I faced the crowd, I knew exactly who shared that moment: my mom, my grandma, Coach Whitmer, and his wife. They weren’t just spectators that day, they were my foundation.
Q: Who are the unsung heroes behind Paralympic athletes?
These four individuals invested time, energy, and belief into my journey. They challenged me when I wanted to coast, held firm when self-pity threatened, and always expected greatness. Their unwavering belief carried me through early mornings, late nights, tough love, and countless sacrifices.
That medal was not mine alone. It reflected a collective journey of perseverance and support.
Q: Why is success rarely a solo act?
Behind every podium finish lies a network of people who uplift, guide, and carry the vision, especially on days when we can’t see it for ourselves. Leadership isn't always about standing out front. Sometimes the most profound impact comes from standing beside someone and helping them rise.
In my keynote speeches, I often challenge my audiences to act as guides. Throughout my career as a Paralympian, motivational speaker, and blind athlete, I've benefited from dedicated individuals who helped me soar, both literally and figuratively.

Q: How does this lesson apply to leadership today?
True leadership is measured not by personal accolades but by the ability to create space for others to succeed. That’s legacy. That’s real impact. Read on about how I stay motivated as an athlete in my blog, Keeping the Fire Lit.
